1932 Alfa Romeo 8C
1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 MM Touring Spider
Chassis 21111033
The Alfa Romeo 8C, designed by the legendary Vittorio Jano, stands as one of the most iconic cars of the 1930s, both on and off the racetrack. Powered by an advanced 8-cylinder engine, the 8C dominated European racing during the decade, earning its place among the most revered cars in automotive history. Produced in various configurations—including sports cars, Grand Prix racers, and coach-built grand tourers—its engine capacity ranged from 2.3 to 3.3 liters. With only about 258 units made between 1931 and 1939, the Alfa Romeo 8C is considered a crown jewel among collectors today.
Chassis 21111033 is one of just four factory team cars built for the 1932 Mille Miglia, where it is believed to have been piloted by the legendary Rudolf Caracciola. After the race, the car was passed through the hands of several Italian owners, each continuing to race it before it was exported to England in the early 1950s. In England, the car remained a competitive presence on the track, albeit with modified fenders, hood, and windshield to suit the racing environment.
At one point, it was owned by an English farmer who drove it back to Italy with his wife to participate in three Mille Miglia retrospective events. Tom Price acquired the car in 1989 and lovingly restored it to its original form, just in time to debut at the 1991 Monterey Historics and the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Since then, Tom has raced this Alfa Romeo more than 75 times and shared countless adventures with his wife, Gwen, including driving it in 10 rallies, such as the renowned “8C Tours of the Rockies,” which they have hosted.
This remarkable piece of automotive history holds a special place in Tom’s heart, making it his absolute favorite car in the collection.
