1939 Bugatti Type 57C Aravis
Chassis 57798
The 1939 Bugatti Type 57C Aravis stands as a shining example of Bugatti’s unparalleled fusion of art and engineering. Widely regarded as one of the most celebrated non-racing Bugatti chassis, the Type 57 was the epitome of sophistication, blending exhilarating performance with the refinement and comfort befitting Europe’s most discerning elite. Introduced in 1934, the Type 57 was a bold statement of innovation, embodying Bugatti’s racing heritage while offering an exceptional road car experience.
Jean Bugatti’s creative vision played a pivotal role in the legacy of the Type 57. From his factory catalog came some of the most iconic designs in automotive history. While Bugatti’s earlier convertible designs were dignified, Jean sought to create an open car that rivaled the dramatic flair of his legendary closed models like the Atalante and Atlantic. This vision gave rise to the Aravis body style, a collaboration with the esteemed coachbuilding firm Gangloff. Named after the picturesque Aravis mountain range, the Aravis cabriolet set new standards for elegance and exoticism.
Chassis 57798, one of only three known surviving examples of the Gangloff-designed Aravis body style, was built in 1939 as a 2/3-seater cabriolet. Its exclusivity is further underscored by the fact that only six such bodies were ever crafted, split between Gangloff and Letourneur et Marchand. Every detail of the Aravis exudes artistry and craftsmanship, from its sleek aerodynamic lines to its luxurious interior. Beneath the surface lies a supercharged inline-8 engine, delivering the spirited performance for which Bugatti was renowned.
This extraordinary vehicle achieved acclaim at the 2024 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, earning Second Place in Class J-2: European Classic Touring Late. Its recognition is a testament to its exceptional restoration and timeless design, preserving the legacy of Bugatti’s vision for style and performance. The Type 57C Aravis remains a coveted piece of automotive history, celebrated for its unique blend of elegance, rarity, and engineering brilliance.
